According to the Mayo Clinic:
“A migraine can be disabling -- with symptoms so severe, all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down. Up to 17 percent of women and 6 percent of men have experienced a migraine.
“In some cases, these painful headaches are preceded or accompanied by a sensory warning sign (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. A migraine is also often accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine pain can be excruciating and may incapacitate you for hours or even days.
“Fortunately, management of migraine pain has improved dramatically in the last decade. If you’ve seen a doctor in the past and had no success, it’s time to make another appointment…”
The Mayo Clinic goes on to point out:
“Although much about headaches still isn’t understood, researchers think migraines may be caused by functional changes in the trigeminal nerve system,* a major pain pathway in your nervous system, and by imbalances in brain chemicals, including serotonin, which plays a regulatory role for pain messages going through this pathway.“
“During a headache, serotonin levels drop. Researchers believe this causes the trigeminal nerve to release substances called neuropeptides, which travel to your brain’s outer covering (meninges). There they cause blood vessels to become dilated and inflamed. The result is headache pain.”
*THIS IS THE SAME NERVE THAT GOES TO YOUR TMJ.
In the Dimension Dental Services approach, the Trigeminal nerve, also known as Cranial Nerve #5, provides the innervation for the TMJ almost exclusively. Simply put, if our certified care can target the dysfunction of the joint, many of the symptoms, such as migraines, will either stop or reduce dramatically in frequency and severity.
1) Migraine is a chronic neurological disease. Although the treatment of migraine includes a combination of nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic techniques, patients with chronic migraine should be treated primarily with preventive medicine.
2) Many migraine medications cause significant adverse side effects.
Also, there is a lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of these treatments, since most preventive agents used for chronic migraine have not been examined in well-designed double blind studies. Consequently, the management of migraine symptoms is challenging for clinicians, and other significant, clinically proven preventive treatments may fill an important therapeutic need.
Studies have shown that “The longer a person stays on migraine medications, the worse the migraines become and the stronger the medications needed.” In our treatment, we offer a two-pronged approach:
A complete, all natural, nonsurgical in-office program for treating TMJ problems and related symptoms such as migraine headaches and tension/muscle-related headaches, jaw pain, bruxism (clenching and teeth grinding), tinnitus (ringing in the ears possibly from neck pain, clenching, and teeth grinding), and jaw pain. Our in-office service may include trigger-point therapy, massage therapy, ultrasound, and computer evaluation of head/neck/biting forces and their relationship to healthy muscle and joint positioning.
Outstanding home products and home painless microcurrent for gentle healing of muscles and joints that brings relief to these trigger zones, decreasing the stimulation of the trigeminal nerve (which triggers migraine headaches). Splints (bite guards/night guards) may also be used to help maintain proper physiological positioning of muscles, joints, and occlusion. We include complete easy-to-follow directions and support for all our services.
"We can help you get relief from TMJ symptoms!"
As a doctor in TMJ practice, I have treated TMD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction), headaches, head and neck discomfort, and more. I have worked with neurologists, psychologists, chiropractors, physical therapists, attorneys (as an expert witness and in the treatment of accident cases), and natural health practitioners. Because of the multifaceted experience I have gained in this field, I bring a unique ability to my patients.
Providing you with relief from the adverse effects of these conditions has become one of the primary focuses of my dental practice. My goal is to allow you to be pain-free and thereby improve your quality of life. In addition to our state-of-the-art equipment and treatment techniques, we stress natural approaches such as the mouth splint (bite guard/night guard).
